Scattering in a Forked-shaped Waveguide

We consider wave scattering in a forked-shaped waveguide which consists of two finite and one half-infinite intervals having one common vertex. We describe the spectrum of the direct scattering problem and introduce an analogue of the Jost function. In case of the potential which is identically equal to zero on the half-infinite interval, the problem is reduced to a problem of the Regge type. F...

Why snakes have forked tongues.

The serpent's forked tongue has intrigued humankind for millennia, but its function has remained obscure. Theory, anatomy, neural circuitry, function, and behavior now support a hypothesis of the forked tongue as a chemosensory edge detector used to follow pheromone trails of prey and conspecifics. The ability to sample simultaneously two points along a chemical gradient provides the basis for ...

Asplenium merapohense (Aspleniaceae), a new species from the Peninsular Malaysia

A new species of Asplenium is described from two collections made on limestone hills in Peninsular Malaysia. Conspicuous by its extremely narrow pinnae, it is probably allied to A. salignum but differs in sufficient characters (scale size, size and shape of lamina, venation and sorus length, position and orientation) to be a species in its own right.

Falling palm fronds structure amazonian rainforest sapling communities.

The senescence and loss of photosynthetic and support structures is a nearly universal aspect of tree life history, and can be a major source of disturbance in forest understoreys, but the ability of falling canopy debris in determining the stature and composition of understorey communities seems not to have been documented. In this study, we show that senescent fronds of the palm Iriartea delt...
